Midsummer is a main national holiday in Finland. The celebration of the summer solstice is typically spent with friends and family at a summer cottage away from the city, either partying or relaxing. But there is plenty to do in the city as well. A typical tradition for example is lighting a bonfire, and there will be one lit in the city harbor at 21.00 on the 24th of July off the shore of Myllysaari. The culture and event center “Kehruuhuone” offers a Karelian program for the whole family on Midsummer Eve (Friday 24.6): food, music, singing and a relaxed midsummer atmosphere from 11:00 to 21:00. Other possible midsummer activities could include renting kayaks, SUP boards, bikes or even a rowing boat. Perhaps taking a small trip on Lake Saimaa or camping in a nearby island. Here are a few accountable destinations for renters: Island: Karhusaari Location: 1 km from the harbor of Lappeenranta by water travel Details: The island has a large ”laavu” (wilderness hut) that can fit a group of 20 around a fireplace. The hut is free to use and there is a pier in front of it, where you can leave your vessel. The hut also has a hearth and there are firewood in a nearby wooden shelter. A composting toilet can also be found on the island. Camping overnight is possible on this island. Island: Ruohosaari Location: 3 km from Lappeenranta, shortest distance by water travel from LUT (Lappeenranta University of Technology) Details: The area has scenic cliffs and a small sand beach. This island like Karhusaari also has a hut, which is maintained by Saimaan Latu and is a popular destination year-round. Camping overnight is possible on this island. The sandcastle is open normally during the Midsummer fest with the exception of the city train not running on the 24th and 25th of June. Recap of events and possibilities: • 24.6 Kehruuhuone 11:00-21:00 (music, food, atmosphere etc.) • 24.6 Bonfire at 21:00 (visible from the harbor and Myllysaari) • Kayaks, canoes, SUP boards, bikes etc. available for rent at the Sandcastle • Sandcastle open normally 10:00-18:00
