Speakers of the Baltic Sea and Quality of Life conference

Ilkka Räsänen

Ilkka Räsänen will be the moderator in the Baltic Sea and Quality of Life Confernce. He is the Environmental Director of the City of Lappeenranta and essential person in the local climate work. Mr. Räsänen was one of the key persons in the winning Green Leaf Award 2021.

Jyrki Laitinen

Jyrki Laitinen, PhD in water resources, has a wide experience in water services as well as in hydrology and water resources engineering. Currently he is working as a head of sustainable water services unit with Finnish Environment Institute SYKE. Dr Laitinen’s expertise is in urban water services, operation of water treatment plants, environmental impact of wastewater and data management. He has been working in projects concerning development of water services, institutional strengthening and capacity building in Finland as well as abroad.

Trudy Higgins

Trudy Higgins works as a policy officer at DG Environment in the European Commission. Since 2019 Trudy has worked in the Marine Environment and Water Industry Unit. The unit is responsible for the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive, Drinking Water Directive and the Bathing Water Directive, as well as the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. Previously Trudy has worked in water utilities and consultancy. Trudy holds a Civil Engineering degree from University College Dublin, and an MBA from Copenhagen Business School.

Seppo Knuuttila

Sepo Knuuttila is Senior Research Scientist in Marine Research Centre at the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE). He has been involved in Baltic Sea research for more than two decades. His main research areas have been nutrient load assessments in the Baltic Sea catchment area and eutrophication of the Baltic Sea. Knuuttila has worked both nationally and internationally to identify pollution sources and find solutions to reduce nutrient discharges to the Baltic Sea. He has also received recognition for his way of popularizing and visualizing information about nutrient discharges, their causes, and measures to reduce them to both the general public and policy makers.

Ilkka Miettinen

Ilkka Miettinen, PhD and docent, is a chief researcher in Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, Expert microbiology unit. His expertises are waterborne outbreaks, water microbiology and drinking water production techniques. Mr. Miettinen is involved in national and international research projects and expert tasks concerning water purification, water quality monitoring, water quality in drinking water distribution systems, and microbes occurring in waters and biofilms.

Arto Nikkanen

Arto Nikkanen is the CEO of water and energy utility Lappeenrannan Energia Oy. At Lappeenrannan Energia Oy we offer our customers a wide range of products including safe transmission of electricity, reliable and eco-friendly heating, and clean water.
Arto Nikkanen holds M.Sc. Eng degree from Aalto university in Electrical Engineering and Industrial Management and an Executive MBA degree from AaltoEE. He has a broad experience from working in different leading positions in energy utilities and technology industry.

Panu Jouhkimo

Panu Jouhkimo is a business developer with 7 years of experience in initiating and executing regional, national and international cooperation projects mainly regarding green technologies. In Mikkeli Development Miksei Ltd. Panu is responsible for coordinating the circular economy ecosystem programme - in particular the Blue Economy Mikkeli Water Hub, being responsible for promoting and connecting the Finnish water technology sector to networks, projects and opportunities nationally and internationally. Panu has a MSc Eng degree in Industrial Management and BEng degree in Environmental Engineering.

Henri Haimi

Henri Haimi works in FCG Finnish Consulting Group Oy as a wastewater process specialist and has a PhD in the field of water and wastewater engineering. His work assignments include process design and expert work both in municipal and industrial applications. Haimi is also responsible for wastewater-related R&D projects in FCG.

Simon Ford

Simon Ford is Sales Director responsible for dry anaerobic digestion systems at Martin GmbH, headquartered in Munich Germany. Simon has 15 years of international sales and business development experience in the bioenergy sector in Europe, encompassing wet and dry AD technologies, agricultural and municipal/waste projects throughout Europe. Simon has a master degree in Biochemistry from the University of Oxford.

Jukka Huusko

Jukka Huusko is M.Sc. (Econ) and MD at Johan Lundberg Oy. He has 25 years experience of trenchless utility pipeline rehabilitation and laying. Since 2018 he has been working as independent consultant at specialized no-dig design and consulting company Johan Lundberg Oy.

Guido Nuijten

Guido Nuijten is M. Sc.(tech.) and Principal Designer and Design and Sales Manager in AFRY Finland Oy. He has over 22 years of relevant and versatile professional experience in project leadership, soil + rock mechanics in tunneling, U/G excavation and other civil projects in Europe, mostly in Finland and in the Netherlands.

Satu-Pia Reinikainen

Satu-Pia Reinikainen is a professor in LUT and she is working in SHEM-WP ENI CBC project on innovative natural solutions in urban run-off water purification. The project is about development of hydride filters combining shugite and effective micro-organisms in filters.

Terhi Renko

Dr Terhi Renko is the Head of Section, Water Services, AFRY Finland Oy. She has worked as a specialist and project manager for AFRY (previously Pöyry) since 2008 in stormwater projects, modelling and management consulting of Water Utilities. She finished her Master’s degree in Water Resources and Hydraulic Engineering in 1998 and worked as a researcher of environmental river engineering until 2004 when finishing her doctoral degree.
