The City of Lappeenranta aims to reduce the environmental impacts of its operations. It intends to become a carbon-neutral, waste-free and emission-free city, with increasing wellbeing among its inhabitants.
Finland's first inland wind park has been built in Muukko, Lappeenranta, by TuuliMuukko Oy.
In partnership with Kaukaan Voima Oy, Lappeenrannan Energia Oy is turning forest industry by-products and logging waste into low-carbon district heat and electricity.
City of Lappeenranta has joined the HINKU network of carbon neutral municipalities. HINKU municipalities set out to cut greenhouse gas emissions faster than other Finnish municipalities, aiming to reduce them by 80% from their 2007 levels by 2030.
Towards resource wisdom
Lappeenranta is one of four pilot cities involved in the Towards resource wisdom project of the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra. The aim is to seek and develop means of making Lappeenranta waste-free and carbon-neutral by 2050. The key components of a resource-wise circular economy are citizens' wellbeing, enhanced energy efficiency and an improved local economy. Energy agency in Lappeenranta and South Karelia
Better energy efficiency and energy savings are key development areas in the South Karelia region, which aims to fulfil the objectives laid down in climate programmes. The Lappeenranta Region Environmental Office operates the South Karelian energy agency, ENNE.
ENNE's operations mainly focus on lending out equipment such as thermographic cameras, power consumption meters and energy saving toolkits.
